Date: saved.

Somebody got a package in the mail the other day.

I wonder who it's from..?

Is that.. CatPrint? Did.. did I actually make a decision on something wedding related?

Holy moose, I did!

Folks, let me present to you.. version 1 of my Save the Date's!

As you can see, I didn't pick any of the options I previously threw out to you. Naturally.

In the end, I really liked the font on the postcard STD, but loved the concept of the block letter/photo STD. I was initially going to make the photos into a removable magnet photo strip, but that was too much work for my lazy butt. So I kind of mashed together a couple different ideas into one, and viola! A Save the Date card.

Now I did run into a few issues along the way.

First off - I checked, double checked, and triple checked the cards to make sure all the information was right and there were no typos. I reviewed my order on CatPrint before I clicked "submit", and made sure to order a hard copy proof of the card before they produced and sent the full order.

Literally no more than 10 minutes passed before I realized that I entered the wrong card size when ordering. I intended for them to be 5" wide by 3.5" tall so they would be a perfect fit for an 4 bar envelope (5.125" wide by 3.625" high). Being the ditz that I am, I ordered them to be 5" wide by 3" tall.

I really can be an idiot sometimes. So I emailed the company right away and asked if they could change the size before they sent the proof. I received a quick reply saying that they would make the changes, but that the actual PDF I sent needed to be adjusted as well. Apparently, since I selected a full-bleed print, some of the words and pictures were being cut off. I needed to send another PDF with a larger canvas size in order to leave a white border around the image so that information wouldn't be cut off. About ten emails later, I thought I finally had it right.

I got the first hard proof copy a few days later.

Now I'm sure most people wouldn't even notice or care, but they never changed the card size, leaving the pictures and the text to be stretched out. You can tell more when you put the right sized card next to the wrong sized one.

See how the bottom one is all stretched out due to the card being a half inch shorter? (Say yes.) Once again, I promptly emailed CatPrint and they sent me a new, appropriate sized card, free of charge. Huzzah!

However.

See how in all the pictures of the cards that there's a white border around the whole thing?

I didn't want that. I wanted the edges of the card to be flush with the sides of the photos, and just skimming the "Save" and website parts, like so:

For a reason unbeknownst to me, CatPrint wasn't able to trim it that way. In the end, it's absolutely fine, it just means that me and my paper cutter need to make amends before I go cropping all 85 of these bad boys down to size. More work and such.

So.. all in all.. what do you think?! Minus the blurring for obvious reasons, I don't think they come out half bad! Now to cut, assemble, address the envelopes, and possibly add a little sumthin' sumthin' extra...

muahahahaha

Drinkage

I should start off by establishing that we have decided to only serve beer and wine at our reception. We're both big wino's and Foxy seriously loves his beer. We realistically can't afford a full open bar, and we really don't see the need for a cash liquor bar in addition to an open beer and wine bar. I know people have varying opinions on this, but it's the best option for us.

Now on to the good stuff. For a small extra fee per person, our venue also allows you to do a champagne toast and/or a signature cocktail to serve throughout the night. Given our budget, we can only realistically do one or the other.

On the one hand, a champagne toast would be pretty schweet, because let's be real here: I LOVE champagne (or sparkling wine as the case may be).

Not really a good descriptive photo, but it's def a usual Sunday afternoon ;)

Plus, I love the look and feel and vibe of a true, classic champagne toast. And some of the the pictures can be unbeatable!

Now on the other hand, a signature cocktail is just so fun. For one, it would ensure that there would be at least some type of liquor for those (lovely) sticklers who aren't big  beer or wine fans. Second, we could have fun creating a name for it like "Blushing Bride Blueberry Gimlet" or something equally as dorky and mushy. Third.. and unashamedly one of the biggest selling points for me.. is that we could put said cocktails in super cute glasses!

Oh yes. I'm a total sucker for the mason jar glasses and stripy straws.

Needless to say, we're pretty set on the signature cocktail - ultimately, we figure people will be more than able to toast with the drinks they will have in front of them instead of champagne. Now we just need to decide what kind of cocktail to serve!

What kind of bar, if any, did you have at your wedding? Any good signature cocktail ideas??

It's aliiiiive

You know those little sponge pills that you stick in a cup of water and they expand to be a huge dinosaur?

That doesn't really look like a dinosaur. Regardless. You get the idea.

That? Has happened to our guest list.

I thought it could never happen to us. Not me, no way, no how. I'm a loser, I don't know that many people, I have a small family. If anything, we'd hit well under the 100 person mark that we have been basing cost points off of.

Well, obviously, that happened. A first review of the list brought to attention the fact that we left off some very key people.. like one of my best friends from college (I mean really, how did I forget him?). A second look made us realize that we should probably ask our parents if they wanted/needed anybody on that list, with the caveat that - since we're paying for it, not them - we may or may not be able to invite everyone (even though it looks like we ultimately will be).

It's kind of hard to say no to your parents, paying or not. A lot of the family add-ons came from Foxy's mom and her side of the family. She remains close with said family, but Foxy has only met them a handful of times and doesn't know them all that well; I've met them once. We figured we would of course invite them, but most ultimately wouldn't attend due to distance, not liking to travel, etc.

Foxy's mom seems to think otherwise - since a big birthday and family reunion of sorts this past May, it is seeming more likely that a lot of them will want to come. A lot meaning 20ish. Which, for a goal of a 100 person wedding? Is a lot.

A third look at the list made me realize I was missing a lot of family friends and people important to my mom and dad that I also know fairly well. So they were added.

A fourth look had us add more recent friends and other older friends that we simply forgot to add on the first time.

Right now, our list tops off at around 170 invited guests, but that doesn't include the 10 or so children that may be in attendance as well. Taking out the people who we think will be obvious "no's", we're left at about 130, not including children. I will admit that we are allowing everyone a +1, which we don't technically need to do, but mostly everyone has a +1 anyway (as in, long time SO or husband/wife). We've kept in mind that the high end of our budget could cover about 110 - 115 people -  still significantly less than the possible 130-140.

I know they say (they being the wedding gods, I think) that there's a 10-20% "no" rate for the RSVP's. They also say that you'll be surprised who actually ends up coming or not coming (we've actually already gotten some of this). My thinking is that, by sending out the Save the Date's soon, we may get a better gauge of who may not be able to attend, which will allow us to readjust our list and expectations a bit.

It's kind of funny, because I never in a million years thought we'd have a B list of people to invite. Geez I'm so popular.

Totally kidding!!

Have/did you encountered a rapid growth spurt with your guest list at any point? How did you handle your awesome popularity? ;)

Five for Friday

1. Earthquake on our anniversary = our love is so amazeballs that we make the earth shake. Hah.

2. Mexican Thursday. Complete with Corona (Light).

3. Your hours may end up sucking, but we've had dinner together 2 nights in a row now!

4. You actually (finally) think it's a good idea to buy an iPad.

5. I won't request a survey, but you did give me those bruises on my calf when you picked me up the other day.

4 years

Back in 2007, I took a chance on a guy I only met twice before and talked with a handful of times. I rented a car, drove two hours to Baltimore, went to an Oriole's game (his first baseball game ever!), and stayed the night.

Four years later, we're living together and getting married in just under 10 months.

Happy (dating) anniversary to the rice to my sushi, the parmesan to my pasta, the cheese to my macaroni!

Photo Hussy

I'm sure you could consider me vain. I very much care about my appearance, and will take as many repeat photos as it takes for me to find an "acceptable" one. Oh, the joys of digital cameras.

Well I'm not really going to have that option at the wedding. I'll be trusting our photographers and wedding guests completely. Hence, I need to make sure I look as good as possible. Obvs.

A few things I'm worried about:

1. Getting a cold sore. Not just fever blisters or canker sores.. I'm talking full blown, caused by genetic herpes simplex virus 1, can only get rid of it with prescription meds type of cold sores.

I won't go too in depth, but I tend to get these when I get stressed. Before my doctor recently informed me of the wonder that is Valtrex and how well it works for the kind of cold sores I get, I would be stuck with those suckers for weeks. It hurt, it looked like I had a fat lip, it was disgusting. Naturally, I started getting worried that one will show up around the wedding. The meds definitely help - I just take a few pills when I feel the cold sore first coming on - and it's usually only bad for a day or so now (instead of two weeks). Still, no amount of lipstick or makeup can cover that baby up once it's there. So, to all that is good and pretty in this world, please do not let this happen!!

Go Mets!

2. "Asian-flush" red face. I promise this isn't racist - it's seriously called the Asian-flush (or glow), even though I'm not remotely Asian (or am I??). It tends to happen when alcohol is consumed, which I definitely plan on doing at our wedding. Sometimes I'm fine - fill me up with some drinks and I look like any typical, tipsy normal person. But sometimes? Oh my gosh you guys.. I get red. Combine that with the red hair and I look like a freaking tomato. The thing is, like I said, it just happens randomly. I get red or I don't, and there's nothing I can do about it. Some people have suggested taking Pepcid AC at least 20 minutes before I start drinking, but I'm a little wary. I can't really do a test run for this because the flush is so unpredictable. Needless to say, tomato face = not attractive = bad pictures. Harumph.

Yes this was college but still SO not attractive!

3. Losing my baby tooth and having a gap-y smile. Yes, I still have a baby tooth.. my left bicuspid (canine) to be exact. Apparently the adult tooth is up there in the gums, but laying horizontally and hence, cannot and did not push the baby tooth out. Like an idiot (who hates pain and surgery), I never got it taken care of even though I've known about it since I was about 12. Very long story short, if I had it dealt with now, I would need braces. And not those fancy invisible ones.. we're talking full on metal mouth, people.

Um, no. Because they wouldn't be off in time for the wedding, and I am decidedly not getting married with braces. Just not my thing. So even though the dentist tells me the baby tooth still seems in good shape and should be as long as I take care of it, I freak out every time I take a bite of an apple (or any other hard, crunchy thing for that matter). Purely terrified.

Ok. So now I'm having a vision of me being red faced, cold sore ridden with a gap-y metal-y smile at the wedding. Oh please, no!

Anybody else have any vanity related worries for the big day? Tell me I'm not totally superficial and vain?

Be gone, drama llama

One thing I've learned from my time planning a wedding thus far is that no matter how far in advance you plan, things still come up that will stress you out and throw you for a spin.

In an extended effort to keep things real and not just give you all fluff (as wonderful as said fluff may be), I have to briefly delve into a recent stressy and unfortunate situation.

Part of the reason I waited so long to even write a tidbit about my bridesladies is because I wasn't sure if the original five I asked to be in the wedding.. would actually end up being in the wedding. Friendships naturally go through their ups and downs, some people grow apart and some grow closer - and all this absolutely holds true when your engagement is over 2 years long and you have your party set from day one.

I won't go into details because it's really not necessary, but one of my original 5 is no longer in the wedding party. Things are still fine between us - there was a short guest appearance from the drama llama, who was sent on his merry little way rather quickly - and at the end of the day after all other situations, my one friend ultimately had to decline from remaining in the wedding due to possible travel and school plans in the future.

I'm not going to lie - I was and still am really bummed by the whole thing. True, we aren't as close as we were 16 months ago, but we're definitely still able to pick up right where we left off every time we see each other. She was one of the first friends I made when I moved to the DC area and I still extremely value her friendship and consider her one of my best. The thing I hate most, though, is that she may not be able to make it to the wedding at all. It's sad, it's hard.. but it's life.

The silver lining to this whole ordeal is that over the past 16 months, I've actually gotten much, much closer with another friend. We went to massage school together for a few months before she had to leave for personal reasons, and we were pretty close at one point; we drifted apart, however, when we weren't seeing each other in and out of class every other day, as can be natural with frienships.

I can't put my finger on what changed, exactly - more free time? different personal situations? - but I now consider this girl one of the few genuinely honest, beautiful, and best friends in my life. We went to Mexico together a few months ago and have tentative plans to do so again in the next few months. We see each other at least once a week now and talk in between those times - she's become like a sister to me these past few months. And so, it was only natural to ask her to "fill in" for my now absent brideslady.

It worked out quite well, because I started to really wish I already had her in the bridal party from the get go; not to replace anybody, but just to be in it. I'm not one to care about uneven bridesladies and groomsmen, but 6 people standing next to me just felt like too many people. We're not planning on having that big of a wedding, and wouldn't you know that it would end up looking like more people were standing up with us than sitting down! Initially I was going to have her sing during the ceremony or help out in another significant way, but this kind of solves that "problem".

Oh the tangled webs we weave when friendships and weddings blend (or clash, as the case may be). I'm doing my best to just go with the flow and let things happen, as life has a funny way of working itself out.. see above.

What snags or change in plans have you come across in your own wedding planning? Any bridal party switcheroos?

In another (life) wedding..

I know I've mentioned my complete obsession love of wedding magazines before, and you must know that I still feel the compulsive need to buy them. Pretty much all of them. Um, hi; wedding mags = girl porn.

At this point, we already have the general vision of the wedding and many of the details that will be involved, rendering the magazines pretty useless. A lot of what I see and read in them is just to ogle at and swoon over, or possibly to get some advice or insight about a certain topic.

Every once in a while, though, I see an idea - a concept - that is just SO awesomesauce, that I almost wish I could find a way to incorporate it into our wedding. Naturally, all these ideas would make absolutely no sense with the wedding we're planning (in my mind, least), but.. in another life and another wedding? I would TOTALLY use these!!

1. Classy Jello shots

Apparently these are the new, cool, "it" thing. I would actually love to have these at the reception, but it seems like too much work and thought and I'm lazy. But how amazing does a vodka pink lemonade jello shot that looks like a petit four sound?!

2. Balloon Place "Cards"

I think these are just so clever. Why write names on a basic place card when you can write it on a balloon? I especially love how they tied them to little favor boxes - two birds with one stone right there!

3. Elemental Wine

This is possibly the spunkiest idea ever for wine bottle favors, or even table wine at the reception. Simple but so clever, in my opinion.

4. Scratch off Save the Date's

Again, a really unique, fun idea - especially if you're having a Vegas/casino style wedding or are big scratch off fans. Cute to boot and I guarantee guests would LOVE to scratch the little hearts. I never would have thought this would be a DIY project!

Have you come across any wedding ideas that you just loved but couldn't find a way to fit into your big day?

Prettying up a package

I've never loved my ruler so much.
That's my handy Publisher work right there.

One of the issues regarding my Save the Dates (and invites, for that matter) is the actual size. When I go about designing things on the computer, I tend to disregard measurements and proportions and such; hence, I end up with a 7x7 design coming out of my printer when I meant for it to be 4x4, or visa-versa (that zoom function is tricky). You get the idea.

Honestly, I initially didn't care what size some things ended up being. But then I realized that I need to put all of these paper goods into envelopes and stamp them.

A funky size STD/invite = a funky, custom sized envelope = lots o' monies.

Dear lord, I wish.

Enter: my ruler and my paper cutter. I LOVE those things right now.

While a lot of what I'm doing is trial and error - designing, printing, cutting, resizing - it's also based on what size envelopes I can (affordably) buy. I've heard it a million times in the wedding world and I will definitely reiterate it: make sure you choose/have the envelopes BEFORE you go designing and ordering any paper products. Wedding rule number 12, fyi.

All well and good. My initial plan was to use a good old belly band to hold together my invite, RSVP card, and possibly the website card as well. All I would need to buy is an envelope for the RSVP's, and another one for the whole invite package itself.

Image via Kaboodle | Image via Project Wedding by DK Designs

And then.. I fell in love with vellum envelopes.

Image via Elizabeth Anne Designs | Image via Mrs. Gloss!

They just look so.. sexy. I especially love the idea and the look of Mrs. Gloss's invites.. to have one regular envelope, with all the invite pieces further contained in a vellum envelope. (I also kind of love how she did a twine "belly band" too.. why pick just one?!)

So of course, using a vellum envelope would bring us up to a grand total of 3 envelopes, each one slightly bigger than then next so they all fit inside each other. And probably increased postage, too. Oh, and did I mention our invites will be square? Well they will be. And for some reason, square envelopes cost more.

It's funny (read: dumb) how all these little things add up, cost wise - the trick is to keep it DIY and still as economical as possible. I have yet to calculate and compare price points, but I still keep seeing those silly little dollar signs.

How did you assemble your invites? Did you go for cost, practicality, maybe a nice combo?

US

Foxy and I have been having some really great wedding-related talks, lately.

As I've mentioned previously, for the past year and few months, I've been the one researching, putting together inspiration boards, and getting the basic "skeleton" of the wedding in place. Now that we are about 8 months away (OMG), it's time to implement some of those abstract ideas and sit down and really work out what we want for our big day.

A few nights ago, we talked music - what we could use for the processional, recessional, and first dance songs. While I've been compiling music for months, Foxy kind of opened my eyes to something: these songs need to be US. While we have similar taste in music, some things are definitely much more my taste and some are much more his. Naturally, I was picking things in "my style" of music; I was hell bent on using this one particular song for our first dance, but you know what? Foxy doesn't even know the band. As perfect as the lyrics and the music may be, it's not his thing. And we can't be dancing to a song that will forever be "our song" if he doesn't like it. So we spent an hour scouring our music collections and came up with some really great, unique possibilities that are so incredibly US.

We also talked about reception music - what will be played, what won't be played, the general vibe, etc. The second thing we booked for the wedding was our DJ, and Foxy was sold on said DJ from the get-go because he's open to us giving him a list of play/don't play songs and is willing to play some of our more alternative/indie music (this is key - not all DJ's will do this!). During said recent conversation with Foxy, I realized that I've kind of been off in la-la land planning and creating a certain vibe for our future wedding without checking in with him enough. He thought we'd be giving the DJ a specific list of what we want played, mostly the alt/indie stuff, with not very much "top 40" mixed in. When he mentioned this, all I heard in my mind was a big, fat SCREEEEECH.

I'm a dancer - have danced my whole life, even a bit professionally - and aside from that, I love dancing to top 40 nonsense. I mean, it's dance-y. I also know that other people like dancing to top 40 nonsense. It's just what is played at weddings. I thought we'd have maybe 10 or so atypical songs of mine and Foxy's choosing, but I'd leave the rest to the DJ to decide - read the crowd and whatnot. The one thing I want and need from the reception part of our wedding is a good dance party. It can rain, we can not have enough chairs, whatever.. what would be most devastating is if people aren't shaking their little tail feathers and having a blasty blast.

Foxy and I talked it out - we still haven't come to a definite conclusion about the reception music yet - but we agreed to talk more about it in the future with each other and with our DJ. Communication is definitely key - even if your groom gives you the go-ahead to do most of the researching and final decision making. In other words, don't be fooled - your man may not always show it, but he does care about the details that make up the big day!

Another (and much briefer) recent conversation was about flowers - I mentioned how much I was loving the look of baby's breath bouquets for the bridesladies.

Little did I know, as relatively blasé as he generally is about the flowers we will have, he actively does NOT want all baby's breath bouquets. Duly noted. However! He also said that a nice mix of something else with the bb would be ok. So we still have some possibilities there!

Lastly, and perhaps the biggest talk we've had thus far pertained to our vows - whether we would write our own or not. I just figured we would write our own since so much of our wedding will have a more modern twist to it, but Foxy very much doesn't want to. This convo deserves a post of it's own, but it was good to sit down and really get an idea of what I want versus what he wants.. what I picture versus what he pictures for our big day.

So all in all.. even though I've realized that some aspects of our wedding will need to be rethought and worked out some more, I couldn't be happier with how personalized and US our wedding will ultimately end up being. I'm also kind of loving how involved Foxy is getting and wants to be with the rest of the planning.

I'd say he's a keeper. ;)

Ten for Saturday

Wow, I've been slacking. Bad fiancé.

1. You always take care of me, whether I'm sick or just violently hung over. (winkwink)
2. You gave me the ok to name our future dog Sushi if it's a girl. Although now that I think about it, that's gross.
3. Honestly? I miss Godric, too ;)
4. You always let me finish "just one more" episode of The City when you get home.
5. I think we both know that I don't clean the cat box as often as I should. Yet you still do it anyway.
6. You like my painting!! (You like my painting, right?!)
7. I've converted you to the wonderful world of iPhones! I never saw that day coming.
8. Your ability to be honest in all situations inspires me.
9. Even though you hate the phrase, I know that deep down, you know "it will all work out".
10. You actually (well, mostly) listen to me and sound intrigued when I babble on about anatomy and muscles and crazy massage therapist things. Thanks for that :))

Das men

And now for something completely different!

This past weekend, Foxy and I decided to hit up Men's Wearhouse to see their rental options for him and the boys. Apparently, I did not do my research.

I mean, what do I know about the men's stuff in regards to wedding planning? Not too much. Shameful.

My initial thought was that the guys would be easy-peasy - we'd just rent their suits! What I didn't realize was that Men's Wearhouse only rents out tuxes, which is great for some people, but it's just not "us". We realized very quickly that we wanted and needed suits as opposed to tuxes due to factors such as color, formality, fabric weight, etcetera.

Here's an idea of what we're looking for:

Image via Style Me Pretty | Photo by Beautiful Moments

In other words: suit pants, vest, dress shirt, tie. The groomsmen would be in a lighter/heather gray get up, and Foxy would be in a darker/charcoal gray ensemble. I suppose the vision is to have the vest and pants be the same exact shade and pattern, a la the first and second photos above.

What we got at Men's Wearhouse was this:

Nice and presentable, for sure, but a little formal and not as matchy as what we are striving for. Except for the tie; we're buying the tie!

I did some extensive searching - Express, Banana Republic, Macy's, Sears, Kohls, the 'Bee - many of which had some good contenders, but it seemed like either the style, color or price just wasn't right. The one site I happened to find a good mix of the three was JCPenny.

Both vests by JF J. Ferrar

Seeing as this is not a definite decision yet, my primary concern was that whatever pieces we ultimately do decide on won't be available when we are ready for the guys to purchase, or that they won't be available in the right sizes. None of the groomsmen are local - four are in New York and one (his brother) is in Colorado - so there's really no opportunity for Foxy to get together with the guys and do one mass trip. Ah, details and complications.

I've admittedly been doing a little research on the guys attire every day, hoping to find an easy, magical solution. Then just the other day, I noticed Mrs. Meerkat's post on Studio Suits, an online store that makes custom suits in a wide variety of fabrics and colors for a really, really good price. Everyone can enter their own measurements online, when they are ready and able to.. no worries about wrong sizes or limited stock. I'm currently awaiting some fabric swatches to see if the colors are right, and if they are? I'm cautiously hopeful we may have found an amazing solution for the guys!

What did you decide for das men at your wedding? If you did the suit thing, where did you get them from? I'm open to any and all suggestions!!

What do cats and paper have in common?

I've made random comments about our invites here and there, but have been holding out on you for the most part. Which I will still be doing a lot of today. Cue the boo's.

Way back at the beginning of mine and Scot's engagement, I had every intention of completely DIY'ing our invites - from the design, to the printing, to the assembling. I quickly realized I would be much better off having my good friend and amazing graphic designer, Michelle, do at least the design aspect of it. From there, I could still print and assemble.

Heh. Can you tell where this is going? After the design was pretty much completed, I tried to print it out on our inkjet.

Yeah, it was a fail.

Part of the invite is a really vibrant (but not obnoxious) orange - or so it appears on the computer screen. When I printed it out, it ended up looking like a really dirty burnt sienna color. So very much not what I wanted.

So, in true Steph fashion, I freaked a little bit and started looking for local, affordable printers who could also cut the invites down to size (it's kind of amusing how terrible I am with a paper cutter). One place that kept popping up on my search was CatPrint - not necessarily local, but you send them your jpeg or pdf file online, and they mail you the finished product a la VistaPrint.

So why have I ultimately decided on using them to print out both my STD's and invites in the near future? For one, they are super affordable. They also send you a draft hard copy before your entire order is put through to make sure your product is exactly what you wanted. They have tons of different paper styles and options, and their online uploader/designer is very detailed and user-friendly.

I've been holding off on ordering my invites until the "appropriate" time to do so (according to the master wedding checklist), but you know what? Screw it. I'm ordering those babies within the next few weeks. One more thing I can check off the list!

Now I just need to figure out how I'm assembling and packaging them. Still have no clue about that one. Obvs.
