A Foxy Fête: Food & Details

(Can't get much more clever with a title, can you??)

One thing I've mentioned briefly in previous posts is how Foxy and I were shooting for a cocktailesque-style reception. The two of us have always agreed that cocktail hour is consistently our favorite part of the weddings we've attended, so we figured.. why not just have our whole wedding be like that?! (In all honesty, we really just wanted a fun wedding without a formal sit-down dinner, so cocktail style seemed to be the way to go.) We worked with the Vandiver during our two year planning period to figure out how to make the reception different enough from cocktail hour to be discernible, but also to still keep it relatively casual and cocktail-y.

The result was a nice mix of high top tables spread throughout the pavilion and surrounding property, with five large round tables in the middle for folks to sit at should they want to (with a few reserved specifically for family).

I'm still obsessed with our linens. I also never thought I would utter those words.

The actual food stations were spread throughout the pavilion, which successfully kept people moving about and mingling for a large portion of the evening. So no, we didn't technically have enough seating available for everyone to sit down at the same time.. but that was kind of the point. As far as I'm aware, it actually worked out really well!

And so, after our teary-eyed and laugh-worthy toasts were over, our food stations officially opened up for everyone to enjoy. Yay food!

I don't have too many pictures of the food itself since we gave our photogs the go-ahead to relax for a few minutes and get themselves a bite to eat (you know, instead of just watching everyone else eat.. that can't be fun). However, I can tell you that I personally dug into anything and everything that John (the owner of our venue) brought over for Foxy and I to eat. I can also tell you that there was absolutely a good five minutes where I was completely by myself at a high top cocktail table, stuffing my face.

So.. yes. I ate at my wedding. I ate a lot.

And since we don't have any photo documentation of my little food-party-for-one, why don't I show you bits and pieces of the rest of the (freaking delicious) grub we had spread out?

There was chilled tomato soup and caprese salad..

..made-to-order pasta with different noodles, sauces, and toppings..

..freshly cooked and carved smoked turkey and beef tenderloin..

..and made-to-order crepes that transitioned from sweet to savory throughout the course of the reception!

You guys.. I know most everyone says that the food at their own wedding was the best ever, but let's be serious. This food was the. best. ever. We're still getting random compliments about how scrumptious it was! (Not to toot my own our venue's horn or anything.) (toot toot)

I also like to think that the food was only enhanced by the atmosphere that the Vandiver staff, Officiant Em, MOH Copper, and many other friends and family managed to create earlier that day. I'm still amazed that my broad concept of flowers, mason jars, lanterns, lace, chalkboard signs (you know, all that quintessential rustic-wedding-type stuff) somehow managed to come together in a relatively cohesive way!

While these bits and pieces of the overall picture made me all warm and fuzzy inside on their own, seeing it all together - from a distance, almost - somehow made it even more magical. Everything was really representative of Foxy and I, and you could just see the love that went into the planning, coordinating, and beauty of it all.

One thing I want to throw out there, especially for brides who are still in the planning phase - try not to get too caught up in the whole "it's so overdone" mindset/judgement. Does "rustic chic" seem to be the new buzzword in wedding land? Absolutely. Do most people even have a clue what that means, or have they seen it before? Probably not. My wedding decor may seem pretty generic to a few people who are immersed in the wedding world, but believe you me - the majority of my guests (even those recently married or in planning stages) were amazed by the amount of personal touches and detail we put into things. Just do you, whatever that may be. Foxy and I did simple, rustic beauty, and we couldn't have been happier. Sure, I had a bajillion and one sources of inspiration to choose from thanks to lots of other people thinking along the same lines, but whatever. I liked it. And if anything, it made my job easier!

Enough about the details.. I think it's high time we got to some dancing, don't you?!

Miss a recap? Catch yourself up!

It's Wedding Week! - The week of the wedding started out pretty hectic, but we made it through (relatively) unscathed.

We're Cool People (who had to deal with a slight change of plans) - On Friday, we made our way to the venue, had a relatable moment on the radio, and learned about some last minute changes that we made an effort to take in stride.

Practice Makes Perfect.. And Crabs Don't Hurt, Either - After most everyone was settled in on Friday evening, we had our rehearsal followed by the best dinner ever - a Maryland crab feast!

Rise and Shine! - Wedding morning was soon upon us, and I woke up at the crack of dawn ready to get prettified.

Pretty Women - Over the course of the next several hours, myself and the girls hung out, got our hair and makeup done, had a photo shoot, and drank champagne.

Dressing Up - Soon enough, it was time for me to slip into my dress!

Dapper Dudes - At the same time, Foxy and his guys were ironing and getting into their suites - and Foxy was opening his wedding day gift!

The First of Many Looks - We had our first look, and both felt so much better after being able to see each other for the first time that day.

A School Bus Photoshoot - Our vehicle of choice for the day was a school bus, which we turned into a photo op both inside and out!

Smiles and Sun - The photos continued by the lighthouse and pier.. with sunglasses and a few funny stories along the way.

ALL The Family - We then met up with family at the lock house for even more pictures, and I started getting a bit antsy and having problems with my dress.

And Then There's Us - I kinda-sorta-maybe forgot all about couple and bridal pictures. Thank goodness for our amazing photog reminding us!

Final Touches - Slight chaos then ensued in the minutes before the ceremony started, consisting of me getting sewn into my dress and the boys getting their bouts pinned on at the last minute.

And So It Begins - The guests arrive, the wedding party lines up, and the ceremony space is revealed - complete with programs, white knots, and bubbles!

All I Want Is You, Will You Be My Bride? - The time had finally come - we all made our way down the aisle while my stepdad and stepbro played and sang a beautiful, acoustic version of "All I Want Is You".

Take Me By The Hand and Stand By My Side - In other words.. the ceremony!

Bubbles and Bustles and Beverages, Oh My! - Bubbles are blown, my bustle is tied in, and cocktail hour commences with lots of love, hugs, and drinks.

The Guestbook - The final version & reveal of our fingerprint guestbook - and some tips, should you want them!

I'd Do Anything For You - The reception kicked off with our oh-so-intricate first dance sway to Wake Up by Coheed and Cambria, which our guests joined in on halfway through.

Make 'em Laugh, Make 'em Cry - Which is exactly what we did, thanks to our bestest friends' amazing and beautiful toasts.

A Foxy Fête: Final Touches

(Alternate title: The One Where I Get Sewn Into My Dress)

Once we finally finished all those pictures, the troops headed back to the Vandiver with about a half hour to spare before the ceremony. The boys went off to one room, while most of the ladies and I went back to the bridal suite for some last minute touchups.

You know.. like physically sewing me into my dress.

All photos by Exclamation Imagery unless otherwise noted.

Things you should know: My dress had minimal boning in the front and had a zipped up back - there was no hidden corset to tighten or adjust. I also have a fairly small upper torso and waist, but some pretty large-and-in-charge hips. My one and only gripe about the dress since day one was that it had a tendency to "sink down" and rest on those big, ol' child-bearing hips. Taking it in a few inches at my alterations appointments and wearing a (tissue and toupee tape filled) corset bra definitely helped, but I was always still nervous about it - I even considered sewing thin spaghetti straps on to just prevent any possible issues.

Alas, I love the strapless look too much. So I had to make it work. And while the tissues and tape seemed to be doing the trick when I first put it on, the dress slowly but surely started sinking down immediately after our first look. I mean.. the groomsmen even started placing bets on when it would just slip down entirely. True story.

Welp, thank goodness for Brideslady M - that's really all I can say. Just as she tried to tape me into place a few hours earlier, she came to my rescue yet again with safety pins and a needle and thread just minutes before the ceremony!

The woman was a freaking miracle worker; I mean.. she's is a dance teacher and has to deal with costumes that don't fit all. the. time.. so this was like second nature for her. Granted I had no idea what she was actually doing to me back there, but I really didn't care. I just needed that baby to stay up!

So while she pinned and pricked and sewed, I was loaded up with a few bites to eat, a few sips of our delicious signature cocktail, and popped a Xanax (hey, sometimes you just need one).

Yea. That's an attractive face.

With all the last minute touch ups and frenzy going on, I totally didn't even notice that my dear friend HK was creeping up on me (you can actually see her arm in the picture above!).

I was so thrilled to see her. Fun fact: she was actually originally going to be in the wedding party when we first started planning 2+ years ago, but had to drop out when a possible schedule conflict came up. There was a time when she wasn't even sure she could make it to the wedding at all, so to have her not only there, but to sneak back for a minute before the ceremony, meant the world to me.

After a few hugs and well wishes, HK went back outside to grab a seat, Brideslady M was almost done with Operation: Sew Fox Into Dress, and it was just about time for me to head out and get this whole wedding thing started! Breezy B gave me a quick once over..

..and MOH Copper smelled my armpits and put more deodorant on me (no picture of that one, unfortunately). Now that's friendship.

MOH Copper also apparently snuck out of the bridal suite a bit earlier in order to help the guys get their boutonnieres pinned on. (They didn't have them on for pictures because the florist was worried about them staying fresh for the ceremony.)

Oh, boys. What would you do without this amazing lady to help you out? ;)

I was so happy she was top of this, because I honestly completely forgot that the flowers still needed to be divvied up and pinned on. I'm betting she was also responsible for making sure the parents all got their flowers, too.. hooray for someone being on top of things!

Foxy Pops, getting his flower on!

Now that the boys were all flowered up, Foxy was smiling, I was practically glued to my dress, and the ladies had their bouquets and a fresh coat of lipstick, we were all just about ready to walk to down the aisle!

(Cue: heart beating at a million miles a minute.)

A Foxy Fête: The First of Many Looks

I was so irrationally nervous before our first look. Sure, Foxy and I hadn't seen each other since the previous night, but we've gone days in a row without seeing each other before. Logically, those 12 or so hours we spent apart should have been no big deal. On the flip side, I've never not had access to my phone or not been able to text or call him, should I want to - especially today of all days, with the millions of thoughts and feelings going through my mind. Just that little bit of extra "forbiddeness", if you will, made everything so much more nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time.

This was it. This was the first time he would see me (heck, the first time he would talk to me) on our wedding day, with me all gussied up in my dress, my hair and makeup done to a tee. Would he even like my dress? Would he hate it and think it looks like a nightgown? Is he as nervous and/or excited to see me as I am him?

All photos by Exclamation Imagery unless otherwise noted.

And so, after running over the game plan several times with the photographers and taking a deep breath (or ten).. I started my walk from the bridal suite to the porch, where Foxy awaited me.

My heart was beating a million miles a minute as I carefully closed the distance between us (the last thing I needed was to fall on my face due to my untested glittered soles) - and I distinctly remember trying to make a snap decision of how to signal him to turn around. Do I grab his butt? Do I cover his eyes all peek-a-boo style?

In the end, I went with a good ol' tap on the shoulder. Foxy knew I was approaching, and he started turning around before I even got all the way over to him. I think it's safe to say that we were both feeling that nervous excitement leading up to this moment!

The moment I saw his face, I just remember being so... happy. For one, Foxy was absolutely living up to his nickname and was looking fine in his getup. Not to mention the look on his face in that picture - I seriously die. Even after five years, he still gives me butterflies with just a look.

Oops.. lip gloss on the lips!

We shared a few moments together, just trying to soak each other in before the whirlwind officially started. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure that these were the only few minutes we genuinely had to ourselves that day.

We shared stories about our respective mornings - you know, like how I was running around like a crazy person and he was all locked up in his room - and admired how awesome we both looked. I also couldn't resist the urge to show off my beyond gorgeous bouquet, ribbons and all!

Oh look, a little Bee surprise!!

We couldn't linger for long, though.. the day was really just beginning and our ever-trusty timeline said it was time for a school bus and some wedding party pictures. Intrigued? Stay tuned!

The Final Say on Florals

Remember how much I love-love-looooved the glamelia style bouquet a while back? Not much has changed - I still love them - but I must admit that ultimately, I will not be sporting one on our wedding day. In the end, I decided against using fake petals or flowers of any kind, and that a real version was just out of the budget.

The important part about those glamelias, though, is that they are what sparked my interest in wedding flowers in general. Before I discovered their beauty, I really didn't care about it either way. Flowers seemed like an extra expense, something we didn't need, something that could be easily replaced by candles or bamboo or something of the sort. Which I still think they can be.. but all of a sudden, I didn't want flower replacements at our wedding; I wanted actual, fresh, living flowers. Scratch that. Needed them. Thus began my wedding flower pinning spree.

Then I found it.. my bouquet. The creme de la creme of florals. The photo that made me the second most excited about wedding flowers.

I can't even deal. I'm obsessed. Just.. obsessed.

And so, my vision was formed into having a blend of garden and wild flowers - delicate yet unstructured arrangements. Over the past year or so, I've created a vision of exactly what I want at our wedding floral wise, and after our meeting with the florist a few weeks ago? I couldn't be happier. We'll still be keeping the florals to minimum due to budget restrictions, but I think the few we will have will blend with our venue and our scheme just perfectly!

The guidelines for my bouquet were as follows: as close as possible to the picture above - think peonies, garden roses, feverfew, Queen Ann's lace, etc. The one negative is that our florist couldn't quite figure out what the big white flower in the center of the bouquet was, so we'll be "replacing" it with some alstroemeria or possibly a football mum.

Football Mum via Whole Blossoms

The bridesladies will be sporting baby's breath bouquets (I got Foxy to concede on that one), with, as I so specifically requested, "the biggest bulb possible". The keywords here would be "overtime baby's breath".

As for Foxy and the men, they will be sporting some more alstromeria and baby's breath.

Alstroemeria boutonniere via Schnucks

Foxy Mama requested a corsage, so the mom's will be getting some form of orchid wrist bling.

As for decor, we decided not to get any flowers specifically for the ceremony - partially because we will be (hopefully) having it outside (which takes care of living floral decor in my mind), and partially because it keeps costs down. The only other flowers we ordered were for the reception - four larger bouquets in mason jars for the four large round tables.

We also decided to get a few single, long stems of flowers (like dinnerplate dahlias and such) to sit at each food station.

Image via EventTagious

The main trick here was to keep this all in our budget. Foxy and I agreed to give the florist a price point of $550, and mentioned that we wanted to stay as close to that as possible. In the end, our flower budget will be closer to $800, but thanks to some monetary help from Foxy Mama and some ingenuity from our florist (that'd be Amanda's Florist, btw) on good flower substitutions, I think we are a-ok with the end result. Honestly, I'm just happy the ladies will have baby's breath bouquets. Total win.

Were you able to stay in budget with your wedding flowers (if you had any)? Since I'm a total novice at this, would you say $800 for our total cost sounds fair?
